Kebbi State Government and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) have celebrated International Children's Day with a call to action for children to shun drug abuse, violence, and unwanted behaviors. The event, held in Birnin Kebbi on Wednesday, was a collaborative effort with Adolescent Girls Initiative Learning Empowerment (AGILE) and the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) Education CDS group, attracting ten secondary schools that participated in quizzes, debates, and parley discussions.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Culture, Alhaji Buhari Wara, reiterated the state government's commitment to supporting children's welfare through quality education and a conducive environment. He emphasized that the state aims to provide all children with access to good education, healthcare, clean water, and a safe environment. Alhaji Wara urged children to focus on their studies, stay away from harmful behaviours, and ensure their safety.
"Children are the backbone of society," Wara said. "As you grow older, you'll face many challenges. Shun drug abuse, violence, and unwanted behaviours, as they create negative consequences. Focus on your studies, and you'll have the power to choose your future and gain wisdom."
Dr. Sahail Sheikh, representing UNICEF, reaffirmed the organization's dedication to serving women and children, giving them voices in various aspects of life, including health, education, clean water, children's rights, and protection from communicable diseases.
The State Coordinator of NYSC, Kebbi State, Alhaji Bala Dabo, commended the education CDS for organizing the quiz and parley competition among schools in collaboration with UNICEF. Unity Girls College, Makerar Gwandu, emerged first in the quiz competition with 60 points, followed by Rayhaan College with 55 points, and Royal Lead School with 40 points.
This year's International Children's Day theme, "Good Education is Essential for a Well-Run Society," resonated throughout the event, with all participating schools receiving certificates of participation. The celebration underscored the importance of education in shaping the future of Kebbi State's children.
As UNICEF continues to work towards ending violence against children, events like these highlight the organization's commitment to protecting children's rights and promoting their well-being. In Nigeria, where six out of ten children experience violence before turning 18, collaborative efforts like this are crucial in creating a safer, more supportive environment for children to thrive.
