From: Kaduna

In a swift display of justice, a Chief Magistrates' Court in Kaduna has sentenced 24 -year-old Edward Williams to 12 strokes of the cane for stealing 12 plastic chairs valued at N224,000. Williams, a resident of Ungwan Yelwa Television area in Kaduna, pleaded guilty to charges of criminal trespass and theft, and requested leniency during sentencing.

Chief Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel considered the punishment lenient due to Williams's admission of guilt, which saved the court from prolonged proceedings. The case, prosecuted by Inspector Chidi Leo, revealed that Williams broke into Sarah Nehemiah's shop in Sabon Tasha, Kaduna, on October 29, entering through the ceiling to steal the chairs.

A security guard apprehended Williams and handed him over to the police, leading to the recovery of the stolen items during investigations. Prosecutor Leo noted that Williams's actions violated the Kaduna State Penal Code of 2017.

This sentence serves as a deterrent to potential thieves and highlights the efficiency of the Kaduna state judicial system in addressing property crimes.
