The Nigerian Senate has launched an investigation into allegations made by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) against Senator Lola Ashiru (APC Kwara South). The Senate condemned the NDLEA for using Ashiru's comments during a debate on a rehabilitation center for drug addicts as the basis for its allegations.
Senator Ashiru, in a motion, expressed concerns that the NDLEA breached his privileges as a senator and the Senate's integrity. He described the allegations as baseless and unfounded, stating the NDLEA was retaliating against his contributions to a proposed bill on drug-related agencies.
The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, criticized the NDLEA for attacking Ashiru based on comments made in the Senate chamber, which are protected by parliamentary privilege. Akpabio emphasized that the NDLEA's actions constituted an injury to the entire Senate.
A six-man Ad-hoc committee, chaired by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (APGA Abia South), has been established to investigate the allegations and report back within a week. The committee members include Senators Kaka Shehu (APC Borno Central), Ireti Kingibe (LP FCT), Afolabi Shuaib Salisu (APC Ogun Central), Ede Dafinone (APC Delta Central), and Senator Lawal Usman (PDP Kaduna Central).
The Senate's decision aims to protect the privileges of its members and uphold the integrity of the institution.
