Kebbi State Government has pledged to support farmers affected by recent flooding through irrigation farming, according to Governor Nasir Idris. During a visit to displaced persons in Shanga Local Government area, the governor announced plans to provide necessary agricultural inputs and materials to help farmers recover lost produce.
The governor distributed food items, including 100 bags of rice, millet, maize, and guinea-corn, as an interim relief measure. He also promised to cater to the wellbeing of the displaced persons and resettle them permanently where necessary.
Governor Idris emphasized the importance of irrigation farming in recouping losses, stating that his administration is agriculture-based and committed to supporting farmers. He noted that Kebbi is endowed with fertile land for cultivation and plans to energize farmers to till the land during the dry season.
Additionally, the governor promised to forward the issue of gully erosion in parts of Yauri Emirate to the Federal Government for solution, as complained by the Emir of Yauri.
The Executive Chairman of the State Emergency Management Agency, Hon. Bello Yakubu Rilisco, expressed gratitude to the governor for his prompt and effective action in mitigating the hardship caused by flooding.
Irrigation farming is crucial in addressing food insecurity, particularly in the face of climate change . It can increase agricultural productivity, reduce poverty, and support food security. By adopting modern irrigation systems, farmers can cultivate more diverse crops and extend growing seasons.
