Abuja, Nigeria — June 9, 2026(Series News Online) - The House of Representatives has directed the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to deploy sufficient investigative and intelligence personnel to Darazo Local Government Area of Bauchi State following a violent farmers-herders confrontation in Lanzai and Dosho communities that left nine people dead.
The directive was contained in a resolution adopted on Tuesday during plenary after Rep. Mansur Manu Soro, member representing Darazo/Ganjuwa Federal Constituency, moved a motion of urgent public importance under Order 8 Rule 5 of the House Standing Orders.
Rep. Soro told the House that the clash, which occurred last Wednesday, also left several residents injured and led to the destruction of property, including about 50 residential huts and sources of livelihood.
“The violent incident in Lanzai and neighbouring Dosho communities claimed nine lives, injured several residents, and destroyed homes and means of livelihood. Many families have been displaced, leaving women, children and the elderly exposed to severe humanitarian conditions,” Rep. Soro said.
The House urged the Nigeria Police Force to identify, arrest and prosecute all persons linked to the violence irrespective of their status.
“The House urges the Inspector-General of Police to deploy adequate investigative and intelligence resources to Darazo, and to identify, apprehend and prosecute all individuals connected with the violence regardless of their status or affiliation,” Rep. Soro said while leading the debate.
Lawmakers also called on the Director-General of the Department of State Services, DSS, to strengthen intelligence gathering and early warning systems in the affected communities to forestall further attacks.
“The House calls on the Director-General of the Department of State Services to intensify intelligence gathering, threat assessment and early warning operations in the affected communities and surrounding areas to prevent further attacks and reprisals,” Rep. Soro said.
The House appealed to the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, and the North-East Development Commission, NEDC, to deliver immediate humanitarian support to victims.
“In addition, the House appeals to NEMA and the North-East Development Commission to provide immediate humanitarian assistance, including emergency relief materials, temporary shelter, food supplies, medical care and psychosocial support for affected victims,” Rep. Soro said.
Rep. Soro expressed concern that repeated farmer-herder conflicts across the country threaten national security, agricultural output and economic growth.
“The recurring farmer-herder conflicts across various parts of the country continue to pose serious threats to national security, agricultural productivity and economic development,” he said.
He reminded the House that the 1999 Constitution, as amended, mandates government to safeguard lives and property and promote the welfare of citizens.
“The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended, places a responsibility on government to protect the lives and property of citizens and promote their welfare,” Rep. Soro said.
The lawmaker stressed that prompt action by security agencies and humanitarian bodies is critical to de-escalating tensions and rebuilding community trust.
“Timely intervention by security agencies, humanitarian organisations and conflict-resolution mechanisms is essential to preventing further escalation and restoring confidence among affected communities,” Rep. Soro said.
He warned that delays in investigation and prosecution could trigger reprisals and worsen the crisis.
“Failure to swiftly investigate the incident and bring perpetrators to justice could encourage reprisals and trigger further violence,” Rep. Soro said.
Consequently, the House urged the Federal Government, through the NEDC, to fund the reconstruction of homes, community facilities and livelihoods destroyed in the crisis.
“The House urges the Federal Government, through the NEDC, to support the reconstruction of residential structures, community facilities and livelihoods destroyed during the crisis,” Rep. Soro said.
Lawmakers further called on the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to expedite sustainable livestock policies, grazing controls, ranching programmes and dispute resolution frameworks in Darazo.
“The House calls on the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to accelerate the implementation of sustainable livestock management policies, grazing control measures, ranching development programmes and farmer-herder dispute resolution frameworks in Darazo Local Government Area,” Rep. Soro said.
The House mandated its Committees on Police Affairs, National Security and Intelligence, Emergency and Disaster Preparedness, and the NEDC to oversee compliance with the resolutions and submit a report within six weeks.
In honour of the victims, the House observed a minute’s silence and extended condolences to the people of Lanzai and Dosho communities through the Bauchi State Government.
