The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Bauchi Field Office has praised journalists in Bauchi State for their professionalism and dedication to their work. The UN agency also commended the cordial relationship between UNICEF and media practitioners in the state, saying it has been beneficial to women and children.
"Journalists in Bauchi State have demonstrated exceptional professionalism in their work," said Dr. Nuzhat Rafique, Chief of Field Office, UNICEF Bauchi. "The media is a critical pillar in society, and journalists have the power to shape public opinion and influence positive change."
Dr. Rafique made the remarks during a condolence visit to the Bauchi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) over the recent death of two journalists who lost their lives in a road accident.
"The level of collaboration between UNICEF and journalists in Bauchi has been remarkable," Dr. Rafique said. "Journalists can play a vital role in addressing harmful practices and promoting values and initiatives that protect and advance the rights and wellbeing of women and children."
Comrade Umar Sa'idu, Chairman of the Bauchi State Council of the NUJ, expressed appreciation to Dr. Rafique and her team for the visit. "This visit shows that we are partners in progress," he said.
Sa'idu explained that the union lost two members in the accident, but appreciated the support provided by the Bauchi State Government and the North East Development Commission (NEDC) in ensuring that injured journalists received prompt medical attention.
"We thank God that the casualties were limited," Sa'idu said. "We appeal for more specialized training to enhance professional skills in different areas of journalism."
The NUJ chairman also commended UNICEF officials for their support and partnership with journalists in Bauchi State.
