Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has unveiled a major boost for healthcare workers in rural areas, approving a 100% increase in rural allowances for medical doctors and a 40% increase for nurses.
The announcement was made during a whirlwind tour of key projects in the state's northern region, where Zulum inspected ongoing developments and interacted with local communities.
"We've found that most of our medical doctors are working in NGO facilities because of better pay," Zulum explained. "So, we're taking steps to ensure our wages are competitive. As of January 1, medical doctors in rural areas will get a 100% salary boost, while nurses and midwives will receive 40%."
The Governor expressed confidence that the move would attract and retain medical talent in rural areas, bridging the long-standing gap in healthcare delivery.
"I urge medical doctors and nurses keen on serving in rural LGAs to report to the hospital management board," Zulum said.
During his visit to GSS Gubio, the Governor directed the provision of essential facilities for laboratories and the library, emphasizing his administration's commitment to improving education infrastructure.
The tour was attended by senior government officials, lawmakers, and dignitaries, including Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno and House of Representatives members, Usman Zannah and Engr Bukar Talba.
