The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has warned politicians against starting early campaigns for the 2027 elections, emphasizing that the country's pressing issues, such as hunger and economic struggles, need attention first. ACF Chairman Mamman Mike Osuman SAN made this call during the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, urging leaders to prioritize the people's needs over electioneering.
"Individual utterances and media exposés relating to the upcoming 2027 elections are already hitting the airwaves," Osuman said. "This momentum, in my humble view, should take the back burner while emphasis should be earnestly placed on governance that will truly address the biting needs of our people."
Osuman emphasized the need for leaders to focus on addressing the root causes of suffering in Nigeria, including brigandage, terrorism, kidnapping, mass murders, hunger, and diseases. "While genuine desires to serve are welcome, concerted efforts that prioritize the safety and well-being of Nigerians should be uppermost in the minds of our leaders," he said.
The ACF also condemned recent killings in the North, including the resurgence of terror attacks in Bokkos, Plateau State, the assassination of northerners in Uromi, Edo State, and the resurgence of Boko Haram in Borno State. "The resurgence of these monstrous bloodthirsty psychopaths are issues of grave concern to us all in ACF," Osuman said.
The ACF chairman urged the group to be beacons of hope for the people by preaching truth to power, citing examples of leaders like Martin Luther King Junior, Indira Gandhi, and Nelson Mandela. He questioned the federal government's claims of calm in the North East, citing the recent floods in Maiduguri and governors' laments on TV about harm to citizens.
