The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has congratulated the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) on its 70th anniversary, praising the organization's enduring legacy. In a congratulatory message issued through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Abdullahi Krishi, on Saturday, Speaker Abbas emphasized the need for better welfare for Nigerian journalists.
Speaker Abbas urged journalists to continue training and retraining themselves to be more ethical and development-oriented. He stressed the importance of adapting to new trends in information and communication technology (ICT), saying, "Journalists must continue to learn, unlearn, and relearn on their job."
The Speaker commended Nigerian journalists for their significant contributions to the country's democracy and development, acknowledging their crucial role in holding the government and its officials accountable. He noted, "The media is called the fourth estate of the realm because its practitioners are critical stakeholders in society, who have enormous power and influence on the people."
Speaker Abbas expressed his belief that better journalists will make a better society, highlighting their watch-dog role in the polity. He disclosed the House's readiness to welcome legislation promoting the sanctity of journalism and enhancing the capacity of journalists and media professionals.
