The Kebbi State government has categorically debunked reports that bandits have taken control of some villages, adjudicating in Sharia Courts and appointing traditional rulers. Deputy Governor Sen. Umar Abubakar-Tafida made this declaration at a press briefing in his office in Birnin Kebbi on Tuesday, stating, "There is no single village in Kebbi State where bandits are in charge of Sharia courts or have appointed village heads of their choice."
Sen. Abubakar-Tafida dismissed the reports as baseless and false, attributing them to the imagination of online news writers . He emphasized that Kebbi State does not have any bandit bases or camps, and that these marauders infiltrate from neighboring states and countries, like Niger Republic, through informants to carry out attacks and retreat.
The deputy governor assured that the state government has implemented effective strategies to combat banditry. A delegation led by Minister of Budget and Economic Planning Sen. Abubakar Atiku Bagudu has held productive discussions with the military high command to eradicate banditry and insurgency in the region.
In a show of support for victims' families, Abubakar-Tafida announced that N92.5 million has been disbursed to those affected by the November 7 bandit attack. Donations Breakdown:
- Gov. Nasir Idris_: N50 million
- Sen. Atiku Bagudu_: N30 million
- National Assembly members, including senators: N10 million
and Dr. Tanko Sununu, Minister of State for Humanitarian Services: N2.5 million
The deputy governor expressed gratitude for their condolence visit to Mera in Augie Local Government Area and their benevolence towards the victims.
