Troops of Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have foiled an attempted attack by Lakurawa Terrorist Group, LTG, in Dandi Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

The military said the terrorists were intercepted while on transit to wreak havoc in Ugwan Hassan village.  A statement issued on Monday said the operation was carried out following credible intelligence on the movement of the group.

"Troops of Sector 2 Operation FANSAN YAMMA deployed for counter terrorism and anti-banditry operations in Kebbi State ambushed the Lakurawa Terrorist Group while they were in transit to wreak havoc in Dandi LGA," the statement said.

According to the statement, soldiers acted swiftly after receiving information on the terrorists’ movement.
"The troops, acting on credible intelligence on the movement of LTG who were in transit to attack Ugwan Hassan village in Dandi Local Government Area, swiftly mobilized and laid a tactical ambush against the terrorists," it stated.

The military said contact was made at a known crossing point near the village.  "The troops intercepted the LTG at a known crossing point near Ugwan Hassan village. Upon making contact, the troops engaged the terrorists with superior firepower," the statement said.
"Overwhelmed by the troops' tactical response, the militants were forced to abandon their mission and retreat in disarray," it added.

In a follow-up search of the area, troops recovered items believed to belong to the fleeing terrorists.
"During the exploitation of the encounter site, troops recovered some items utilized by the terrorists for logistics and communication," the statement said.

"The items recovered include two motorcycles, mobile phones, T&T communication radios, and one Nigerien ID card belonging to one of the fleeing terrorists from Tilbiri Region of Niger Republic," it stated.

The military said operations are ongoing to track down the fleeing members of the group.  "The troops are currently dominating the general area with aggressive patrols and are in active pursuit of the fleeing terrorists to ensure the continued safety and security of the local populace," the statement said.

Residents of Dandi LGA have commended the swift response of the troops, saying it prevented what could have been a deadly attack on the community.

Security agencies have in recent months intensified operations along the Kebbi-Niger Republic border to check the activities of Lakurawa terrorists and other criminal groups operating in the axis.
