NIWA Launches Nationwide Reform To Phase Out Unsafe Boats, Modernize Jetties

...Board Chairman says unsafe vessels will be phased out, infrastructure upgraded nationwide

By Our Correspondent

The National Inland Waterways Authority, NIWA, has rolled out a nationwide reform plan targeted at upgrading jetties, removing unfit boats, and modernizing inland water transportation across the country.
The plan, according to the Authority, will also involve collaboration with local boat manufacturers and private sector investors.
Barr. Mukhtar Shehu Shagari, Chairman of the NIWA Governing Board, announced the initiative on Thursday in a statement signed by his Media Aide, Musa Ubandawaki.
The announcement followed an inspection tour by members of the Board and the Managing Director of NIWA, Engr. Yusuf Gerie.
According to the statement, the new Board has started a full evaluation of NIWA facilities nationwide to identify areas needing urgent attention and to set priorities for rehabilitation.
“We are determined to restore and modernize our offices, jetties and other critical facilities across the country,” Shagari said.  “Our goal is to ensure that all NIWA assets are functional, meet current standards, and can effectively support the demands of water transportation.”
He added that funds have been provided in the budget to tackle infrastructure deficits within the Authority.
“We have made budgetary provisions to address the infrastructure challenges in our offices and jetties nationwide,” Shagari stated.  “We want every NIWA facility to be in good shape and able to deliver efficient services to Nigerians.”
The Board Chairman further disclosed that phasing out old and unsafe boats is a key part of the reform agenda.
“A major focus of this reform is the gradual withdrawal of aging and unsafe vessels that continue to endanger passengers and boat operators on our inland waterways,” he said.
Shagari explained that the Authority is committed to transforming Nigeria’s inland waterways into a safer, more reliable and economically viable transport system.
“The renewed commitment of this Board is to reposition the inland waterways for safety, efficiency and profitability,” he said.
Engr. Yusuf Gerie, the Managing Director of NIWA, who was part of the inspection team, said the assessment would guide the Authority in prioritizing projects that will improve service delivery.
The Board said partnerships with indigenous boat builders and private investors will be central to achieving the modernization drive.
NIWA noted that the reforms are expected to reduce accidents on waterways and boost confidence in water transportation as a viable alternative to road transport.
