Governor Idris Dissolves KEBSIEC Board, Reaffirms Commitment to Commission’s Independence

BIRNIN KEBBI - Kebbi State Governor, Comrade Dr. Nasir Idris, Kauran Gwandu, has approved the dissolution of the Governing Board of the Kebbi State Independent Electoral Commission, KEBSIEC, following the expiration of its tenure.

The directive was conveyed in a letter dated Tuesday, September 8, 2026, signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Yakubu Bala Tafida, and issued through the Director, Executive Council, Kabiru Hassan Wasagu.

According to the statement, the decision takes effect from September 18, 2026.  "I am directed to inform you that His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kebbi State, Dr. Nasir Idris, has approved the dissolution of the Governing Board of the Kebbi State Independent Electoral Commission following the expiration of its tenure, with effect from September 18, 2026," the letter stated.

The government clarified that the dissolution affects only members whose tenure has lapsed. "The statement further clarified that the two other members of the Commission whose tenure has not yet expired will remain in office until the Commission is reconstituted," it added.

Governor Idris commended the outgoing board for its service to the state. He also reiterated his administration’s resolve to ensure the Commission operates without interference. "I am assuring you of the renewed determination of this administration to protect the independent status of the Commission," the Governor said.

Political observers note that KEBSIEC is expected to play a central role in conducting forthcoming local government elections, making the reconstitution of the board a key administrative step for the state government.
