The Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Professor Adamu Ahmed, has disclosed that researchers at the institution have developed zeolite catalysts for Nigeria’s petroleum sector with support from the Petroleum Technology Development Fund, PTDF.
Prof. Ahmed announced this on Monday during a visit by the ABU management team to the Executive Secretary of PTDF, Professor Shuaibu Shehu Aliyu, in Abuja.
He said the innovation could save the country over $300 million in foreign exchange yearly if fully commercialised.
“We have, with PTDF support, produced zeolite catalysts locally for use in the petroleum industry,” Prof. Ahmed said. “If this innovation is commercialised, it will save Nigeria more than $300 million annually in foreign exchange.”
The Vice-Chancellor noted that the breakthrough by ABU scientists has strong market potential and could reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported catalysts.
“This research demonstrates our capacity to develop home-grown technology,” he said. “It will cut down import dependence on petroleum catalysts, boost local manufacturing, and advance Nigeria’s drive for technological independence.”
Prof. Ahmed added that the visit was also to felicitate with Prof. Aliyu on his appointment to head the petroleum development agency.
“We are here to congratulate you, a proud member of the ABU community, on your appointment as Executive Secretary of PTDF,” he said. “Your elevation is well deserved.”
He urged PTDF to help move the research from the laboratory to the market through strategic partnerships.
“This achievement shows what consistent investment in research can deliver,” Prof. Ahmed said. “I appeal to PTDF to support the commercialisation of this innovation through pilot projects, industry partnerships and other collaborative frameworks.”
In his response, the PTDF Executive Secretary, Prof. Shuaibu Shehu Aliyu, commended the Vice-Chancellor for his leadership style.
“You are an outstanding leader,” Prof. Aliyu said. “Your humility and open-door approach continue to inspire confidence within and outside the university community.”
Prof. Aliyu assured that PTDF would strengthen its ties with ABU, especially following recent developments in the sector.
“We will deepen our collaboration with Ahmadu Bello University,” he said. “This is particularly important now that the PTDF College of Petroleum and Energy Studies has been upgraded to the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology.”
The meeting was attended by senior officials of ABU and PTDF.
