Birnin Kebbi, Nigeria — May 3, 2026(Series News Online) -Traders in Birnin Kebbi can now conduct business in a modern facility following the inauguration of the reconstructed Kayan Gwari Fresh Produce Market by Kebbi State Governor, Comrade Dr. Nasir Idris, Kauran Gwandu, on Sunday.
The project delivers on an earlier pledge by the governor to upgrade the market after repeated calls from traders and residents for a safer, more functional trading space.
Governor Idris, while addressing attendees at the event, described the former structure as inadequate for commerce, saying it lacked basic infrastructure and exposed traders to harsh conditions.
“Before this intervention, traders operated in an open space that was not fit for commercial purposes. We took action after receiving appeals from the market community for a better environment to support their trade,” he said.
He stated that the new stalls were designed to protect perishable goods and provide stability for vendors, particularly those selling tomatoes, pepper, onions, and other vegetables.
“The goal is to enhance the income and welfare of our traders. With secure and organized stalls, they can now store their goods safely and trade without unnecessary setbacks,” Idris added.
The governor noted that the market aligns with his administration’s focus on grassroots development and direct impact projects.
“This market demonstrates our resolve to drive economic activities at the community level and ensure that government projects translate into real benefits for the people,” he said.
Idris thanked God for the completion of the facility and formally opened it for commercial operations.
“We are grateful to God for seeing this project to completion. I hereby commission this market for the use of our traders and the public,” he declared.
The Chairman of Kayan Gwari Fresh Produce Market, Umarun Basiru, said the reconstruction had renewed hope among traders and would strengthen commerce in the area.
“We are grateful to the governor for keeping his word. This market is a game changer for us. It will improve business and uplift our livelihoods,” Basiru said.
After the commissioning, Governor Idris toured the new stalls alongside senior government officials and dignitaries.
The event drew government functionaries, political leaders, and members of the trading community, who praised the intervention as a people-focused initiative.
